The Basics Class

Basics Class (in the AME office or as a workshop on-site)

This class (Three 1-1/2 hour sessions) offers participants an innovative framework for understanding and managing anger. The approach is based on key principles of healthy anger management including those described below.

1. Anger is a natural emotion
2. It is often a distraction from or a reaction to other emotions
3. Anger is distinct from aggression
4. Our anger tells us more about ourselves than about the person or situation that leads us to experience anger
5. Healthy anger management is based on skills that can be learned
6. Learning to constructively manage anger is essential for healthy emotional well-being

This class (3-8 participants) promotes sharing and learning in a safe and comfortable setting. The format involves presentation, shared discussion and the practice of specific skills and is adapted to the unique needs of each individual. Constructive feedback and monitoring are a part of each session.

Topics include:
1. Principles of healthy anger
2. Identifying the experience of anger: emotional, physical, social intellectual, spiritual and general outlook reactions
3. A model of anger
4. Identifying personal messages about anger
5. The role of “child logic” and anger
6. Recognizing how expectations impact anger
7. Anger management strategies including physical arousal control, addressing “self-talk”, and identifying related emotions
8. Communication skills
9. Defusing anger
10. Anxiety and anger
11. Shame and anger
12. Depression and anger
13. How to choose the most effective strategies
14. Identifying one’s vulnerable “buttons” How to practice strategies

Fee: $175 - includes a workshop manual
